What is the identified problem?

Conventional system of controlling traffic lights at the junctions i.e using Automated Traffic control system or Traffic Police man has following disadvantages : 1) In case of the automatic control traffic system the control is not dynamic i.e it is preprogrammed and independent of current status of vehicular flow in particular line of junction and sometimes it may result in congestion requiring the human control 2) With respect to human control though they are intellectual, but may not be accurate always. Sometimes it is difficult to observe all the directions at once. Staying at the junctions may be hazardous for their health because of huge amount of pollution.

Here we want to relax the human effort in traffic control with the help of Electronic sensors and Dynamic control logic which takes decisions of signalling appropriate lights according to the flow of vehicles in each direction.

Principle : Here the time of ON state of Green/Reds Signal depends on the count of vehicles approaching that junction from that lane.

Construction :

  1. At a distance of nearly 100m away from the junction point, Digital Counters(Up Counter) is placed, similarly a Down counter is placed near the junction, these counters are placed on the side from which vechicle approach towards the junction.
  2. Similar construction on all the lanes that are connected to the junction.


Working :

Now, our control system is equipped with the net vehicular count on all the lanes with in a range of 100m. Let us assme that there are four lanes connecting the junction, On one lane(say L1) the Net Count, C1 ( i.e difference of upcounter and downcounter) is 20 ; on L2, C2 is 30 ; on L3, C3 is 15 ; on L4, C4 is 8. Control is implemented in this way, first it starts from L1 and time for which it has to show green is determined by the C1, as per above data 40sec, 60sec, 30sec, 16sec for L1, L2 , L3 and L4 respectively assuming time for each vehicle is on average 2sec.

When we are shifting the signal from lane to lane there is sometime given for pedestrians which is decided by observing the data in that location.

How well does the proposed solution enable great commuter experience?

1) It won't create problem of heavy traffic jam at one side of the road even at the day time and also during night time. 2) There is a uniform flow of vehicles at any instant of time, no chance of increasing more no.of vehicles on one side.

How attractive is this idea for partners from transportation, business, government, non profit or other sectors to get involved?

Less human intervention is required, if all civilians follow the rules of traffic strictly. It is efficient control of flow of vehicles.

Environmental impact, whether the proposed idea in predominantly service based without adding more physical structures

No need of any additional constructions except poles for mounting the counters It also saves the Traffic Police from exposure to Air pollution.
