Evaluative Information Support System For Public Transport

What is the identified problem?

The imminent migration of people into cities to find jobs and livelihood has created a huge pressure on the urban settlement especially in the Tier-1 cities. One of the most important aspects of urban living is intra-city travelling. A huge population travels back and forth to work everyday creating peak traffic hours and massive traffic volumes. Trends forecast that the number of vehicles on roads will increase exponentially creating an enormous pressure on the existing infrastructure. The point of emphasis being that travel in Public transport should be encouraged and masses should have access to the required information to help them travel comfortably in public transport and also provide them with the best in terms of shortest and most traffic efficient routes. The identified problem was a huge mass resorts to private vehicles and autos because they do not have adequate information about the modes of transport in a specific route or the schedules in which they travel. This was the gap that pushed the urban masses to use other modes that increase vehicular volumes on road and lead to further problems like congestion and pollution.

Brief about Solution

  Rasta- an evaluative platform where we can tag the location we are at and the one we want to reach to. It provides the route, the available modes of transport and within that a comparative analysis between the various modes. It also goes on to further provide price points of the different modes of transport. So, basically a commuter is provided with adequate information so s/he can choose the shortest route way of travel or cheapest to travel depending on their preferences. Rasta also provides the option of accessing information through online platform, mobile application and telephone helpline. Some of the key features includes voice recognition / Spoken command (say and search) that saves helps the commuters find a destination on the go with convenience. It also allows address book integration that synchronizes the addresses of the contacts to show their location on the maps so that there is no need to feed in that data. It also keeps backups of last search so as to keep a track of places the user has traveled to so as to make the next time they travel to that destination easier. An added feature is also the ability to communicate with other RASTA users and share reported road hazards and more making this whole system more interactive and engaging. The reason for designing an information support system being that the target is not the daily commuter who probably knows all possible routes to get to their workplace or any such frequented place. The idea is to target the occasional travelers and the rare travelers who do not access to the kind of information required to reach a particular destination and might struggle to go travel by public transport. This makes it more convenient and comfortable for the commuter to travel by public transport which finally leads to diverting the masses resorting to private vehicles due to lack of information to public transport

How well does the proposed solution enable great commuter experience?

The proposed solution reduces the stress the commuter feels in public transport making it a more convenient to access the information associated with travelling to a particular location. This reduces the time spent in waiting for buses or scouting around to get information about how which bus/ metro/ any other mode of public transportation they function and their schedules and price points. The commuter can access the information about how to travel and synchronize their time table according to that enabling a much more stress-free and suitable route according to the requirements of the traveller. Also RASTA gives information regarding price points and estimated time. So the commuter can compare the various modes in order to arrive to their best option of travel in a given situation.

How attractive is this idea for partners from transportation, business, government, non profit or other sectors to get involved?

The transportation sector and the government can provide the commuters a great experience through this service enabling a stress-free intra-city travel. The service also requires an establishment that could provide livelihood and employment opportunities to a wide population.The business sector can benefit from this sustainable business model that enables various stakeholders to create a comprehensive system and create continuous revenue generation. The non-profit organisations working for environmental issues and climate change issues can aid in inculcating a public transport using behavior in the population by creating awareness as to how much fuel they are saving each time they travel by public transport and the reduction in pollution and the various implication that has on the environment.

Environmental impact, whether the proposed idea in predominantly service based without adding more physical structures

The service provides information for masses to travel in the most efficient way - saving fuel, reducing air and noise pollution and also enabling a stress-free travel for the commuters. This helps in creating a sensitivity towards choices we make in our travel in our everyday life. This also aides in inculcating a behavioral pattern in the masses that encourages them to travel by public transport. It reduces congestion on the roads and the vehicular volume which is the primary cause of various environmental issues and stress. The service also does not require any physical infrastructure, but capitalizes on the information support system around the modes of transport in a given route.
